JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS

Independence vs. Ask for Help

In the pursuit of success, many of us have mastered the art of independence, while carving out impressive paths in our careers and personal lives. However, the journey to fulfillment and alignment involves recognizing the value of seeking support from others. Balancing independence with the willingness to accept help is a delicate proposition that many of us have not yet mastered.

Our strength comes from the power of being able to ask for help. Not when you are already exhausted and ready to give up, but when you know the task at hand is more than you can handle by yourself. Don’t wait until you begin to suffer or have that suffering become your identify. The person you are hurting the most is yourself.

Here are four key points to consider as you navigate this intricate balance between independence and asking for help:

  • Acknowledge Your Strengths and Limits. High-achieving women often pride themselves on their ability to handle challenges independently, but it’s essential to recognize that everyone has their limits. While it’s important to understand and appreciate your strengths, you also need to be honest about areas where you could benefit from support. Recognizing when to ask for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
  • Build a Supportive Network. Independence does not mean isolation. Cultivate a community of mentors, friends, and colleagues – your tribe – who understand your goals and values, and can uplift and inspire you. Having a support system is crucial for moments when you need guidance, perspective, or simply someone to listen.
  • Delegate with Confidence. High-achievers often struggle with delegation, fearing that relying on others may compromise the quality of their work. It has taken me a long time to realize this. Learning to delegate tasks effectively is a key component of balancing independence and seeking support. Trust your team, and recognize that shared responsibilities may lead to better outcomes.
  • Embrace Vulnerability. Recognize that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your authenticity. Embracing vulnerability fosters genuine connections and allows others to understand your needs. It takes strength to be vulnerable and seek support when necessary, which can lead to more meaningful relationships and personal growth.

In the pursuit of success, you must recognize the power of both independence and seeking support. When you acknowledge both of these elements as being equally important, you will find greater satisfaction in both your personal and professional endeavors. Remember, true strength lies in the ability to harmonize independence with the wisdom to seek support when you need it.
