The Whispering Heart

JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS

Intentions

Here we are, the first few days of 2024. As the clock struck midnight on January 1st, Client did you make one (or more) New Year’s resolutions? You know, lose weight, go to the gym, or be more organized. It’s the same thing year after year.

Did you know that only 9% of resolutions are completed? In fact, 23% of people will quit their resolutions after the first week and 43% will quit them by the end of January. That’s a lot of broken resolutions!

This year, I want you to say “No” to making resolutions, and “Yes” to creating intentions.

An intention is an idea that you plan (or intend) to carry out. Your goal, purpose, or aim is your intention. This helps create synergy in your life since these intentions will help you move your goals and purpose forward.

But how do intentions really help you?

I want to share 6 reasons why you may find setting intentions to be beneficial:

  1. Flexibility. Intentions are often more flexible than resolutions, which can be rigid and binary – either you achieve them or you don’t. Intentions, on the other hand, allow for adjustments and adaptations. That’s what life is about – it’s about being flexible and being able to go with the flow!
  2. Focus on the Present. Intentions are often about the present moment and the process, fostering a sense of mindfulness, rather than a specific outcome. For example, instead of having a goal, “Lose 10 pounds by the end of March,” an intention-focused approach would be, “I intend to prioritize my well-being by making mindful and healthy choices each day.” Do you see the difference? I hope you will think about making small self-talk changes like this.
  3. Positive Mindset. Intentions are typically framed in a positive manner, emphasizing what you want to bring into your life rather than what you want to eliminate. This positive framing can contribute to a more optimistic and motivated mindset, which can be conducive to long-term success.
  4. Less Pressure. Intentions are more about the journey and personal growth, which can alleviate the stress associated with achieving a predefined goal. The journey is where you will learn much more about yourself.
  5. Personal Growth. Intentions often involve cultivating certain qualities or behaviors, leading to personal growth. This focus on personal development can be more sustainable and rewarding in the long run compared to achieving external goals.
  6. Adaptability. Intentions allow you to adapt to new situations and challenges without feeling like you’ve veered off course. This adaptability can make it easier to stay on track in the face of unexpected events.

I hope you will look at your goals, values, or purpose and set intentions for the year that help you grow instead of making resolutions that tend to fail.

How well do you know yourself and why does it matter.
